The first word Tessa picked up on in her brain was no. It was writ large and loud. NO.

‘Tessa?!’

Oh, it wasn’t just in her brain. ‘You can’t think it’s a good idea?’

Kate pulled back to the other side of the sofa and chewed at the skin around her nail, her shoulders tense and to her ears. ‘I want Ryan back,’ she whispered.

The whisper rang loud in Tessa’s head. The morning that had been silent and slow now moved at a speed and sound she couldn’t control. All she wanted was to curl up and hide under her duvet and wait for Ryan there. But Ryan wouldn’t come until the police found him.

‘It was easy yesterday.’ Her voice was taut like piano wire. ‘He sent the email for me to do something. I did what he asked and told myself I’d get Ryan back.’ One of the wires snapped, Tessa’s pitch rising, not in panic, but in a cold hard twang as she focused on her words.

‘It was stupid…’ She said, seeing the oven door in her mind. ‘I was stupid.’ Her tone hard as stone. ‘How had I not considered the terror waiting behind the door?’

Her head snapped round to look at Kate. ‘Because I was in my own home, that’s how.’

Kate flinched. She pulled her hand from her mouth and wrapped her arms around her body, hugging herself tight.

‘And you want me to open something that he’s sent into my home? Not just open, but do it online for him to see, as well as anyone else who wants to watch?’

As a personal trainer, Kate was used to encouraging her clients and was bold and confident. She looked at Tessa, conflict washing over her face, but the desire to see her brother won out. ‘How bad can it be?’ she whispered, blinking tears away. ‘Compared to Ryan?’

Tessa’s chest tightened and she swallowed. ‘My knickers, Kate. The most intimate thing I have.’ She sucked in her breath at the mental image of what he might have done before the slashing and the blood. Had he held it close to his face? Let the lace and satin fall across his cheek as he inhaled?

Her stomach heaved and Kate reached out and clasped her hand.

‘He slashed it, and he soaked it in Ryan’s blood.’ She was pleading. Clutching Kate’s hand with both of hers. The phone had fallen to the sofa beside her. ‘It’s in these ridiculous tasks that he sets that Ryan is being hurt. It’s not in my refusing. It’s in the opening. Ryan had already been injured. It’s all lies that he will be hurt if I don’t open what he tells me. The maniac gets off on seeing my pain.’ Her voice rose to a shout. ‘And I won’t give it to him this time. I won’t, Kate. He’s playing me like a puppet, terrifying me, torturing me as much as Ryan, while all the time hurting Ryan anyway.
